1900-I

' A photograph showing an unknown period in a close relative’s live was the starting point of a new project: "1900". Filling in this void in my family history, I  created a photo document with memories of a fictive past '

The series “1900” has been judged as Highly Commended by the London Photographic Association.

A History of Hardship

“Intrigued by a photograph showing a forefather dressed in formal Husar attire I decided to explore the voids in my ancestors’ history by creating memories of a fictive past.  I chose to make images of the same person over an extent of time, showing him aging. This enabled me to make the abstract idea of time more visual. The work is not a portrayal of this particular individual with his personal identity but refers to man living through history, facing hardship.

By leaving out any surroundings and unneeded elements, only showing one single person in front of a sober background, I want to let the details become more meaningful. The wrinkled skin, a missing button, an old rag used as scarf; to me these are symbols of perishableness. The accuracy of the clothes is unimportant; this is about making self created foregone times tangible.”
